Should Green Parties go into Government?

Annalena Baerbock, German Green Party government minister, in front of a green background

Last year, the Green European Journal published my analysis of why Green Parties lose popularity after they go into Government. The article was the culmination of a four-month-long research project which could have profound implications for any insurgent political parties thinking about going into government.

As several brilliant researchers have observed, government tends to result in a sizeable drop in votes for Green Parties. But nobody (to my knowledge) has been able to offer robust evidence for why this is the case.

In ‘Should European Green Parties go into Government’, I argue that this drop in popularity should not scare Green Parties away from going into government. In fact, it should encourage them to do so.
